Our Group

The collaboration between Dr. Butch and Prof. Wang unites interdisciplinary expertise in engineering, nanotechnology, data science, and medicine. Dr. Butch's computational proficiency complements Prof. Wang's strengths in molecular imaging, drug delivery, and surgical navigation. Combining cutting-edge data analytics with experience translating technologies to the clinic, our joint group pushes new frontiers in cancer diagnosis and therapy. Projects leverage Dr. Butch's machine learning approaches and Prof. Wang's novel nanotherapeutics for greater impact than either could achieve separately. This powerful alliance integrates our complementary capabilities to solve complex biomedical challenges.

Professor Yiqing Wang

Picture
Dr. Wang Yiqing is a leader in developing innovative technologies for cancer diagnosis and treatment. His research integrates engineering, nanotechnology, and medicine to create breakthroughs including surgical navigation systems, new chemotherapy drugs, and magnetic nanoparticles.

Since joining Nanjing University in 2013, Dr. Wang has pioneered a real-time digital fluorescence imaging system to precisely guide tumor removal surgeries. His lab also designs novel anti-cancer drugs and mechanisms for targeted drug delivery. He has co-authored papers in prestigious journals and holds several patents. Dr. Wang complements his research with teaching problem-based learning courses.

Through extensive global collaborations with top universities and hospitals in China, the United States, and worldwide, his lab aims to rapidly translate discoveries into clinical impact. Dr. Wang has been the principal investigator on multiple major research grants funded by the National Science Foundation of China, National Key R&D Program of China, and Jiangsu Provincial Key R&D Program.

Associate Professor Christopher Butch

Picture
Dr. Christopher Butch leverages his expertise across organic chemistry, biochemistry, and chemical engineering to pioneer new computational techniques solving complex problems at the interface of chemistry and biomedicine. His research integrates traditional modeling approaches with data science and machine learning to elucidate mechanisms in prebiotic chemistry, drug discovery, and materials science.
As part of the Liotta Group at Emory University, he used computational approaches to study a broad range of diseases including HIV, neurological diseases, and cancer. His projects included developing machine learning models predicting HIV drug resistance, using molecular dynamics simulations to derive key mechanistic insights into neuron ion channels, and elucidating structure-activity relationships for novel CXCR4 chemokine receptor antagonists. He has published in top journals including Journal of the American Chemical Society and Science Advances. Driven by big data, Dr. Butch’s multidisciplinary research pushes the boundaries of what is possible at the nexus of computing and molecular science. He continues pursuing creative approaches to long-standing questions in drug development, bioengineering, and astrobiology.
